History of hunts sports store
Stu Hunt was an avid hunter and fisherman who worked as a deckie out of Whakatane before moving to Auckland in 1960 and opening Hunts Sports Store in 1963. Every spare moment was spent on the water with his mates Ray McIntyre, Ron Cross and Fred Parsons, mainly in the far north chasing the elusive 30lb snapper. Many a trip produced large fish; indeed some of the fish still adorn the walls of the shop and have been the source of many a story over the years. Always ready to help and advise both young and old, Stu built a large following, eventually founding the North Shore Surfcasting Club in 1969.
Stu’s business philosophy was simple: sell only good quality product and back it up with the highest standard of service. The store has an enviable reputation for top quality rod and reel repairs which are done in house.
Stu’s son Ian joined the business in 1973 and the business grew steadily, eventually outgrowing its Takapuna premises and relocating to Milford in 1990. Sadly, Stu past away four months later, leaving a huge hole in the fishing fraternity on the Shore. Most of his old fishing pals still visit regularly and many memories and big fish stories are still shared over a cuppa.
Hunts Sports Store is certainly a unique tackle outlet and destination store, so if you are visiting Auckland, pop in have a chat.
